💡 What is the FOB Test?
The FOB (Fecal Occult Blood) test is used to detect microscopic traces of blood in the stool that are not visible to the naked eye.
It is indicated for preventive screening and monitoring of gastrointestinal disorders.
🧪 How the FOB Self Test Works
There are two main types of tests:
1. Immunochemical test (iFOBT or FIT) – the most modern
Detects human hemoglobin (specific for blood from colon or rectum).
✅ No special diet required before the test.
1–2 samples are enough.
Result in 10 minutes.
2. Guaiac test – older
It reacts with the iron in hemoglobin.
⚠️ May give false positives for red meat, some medications, or vegetables.
It requires more attention to the diet before the test.
📝 Procedure (for at-home immunochemical test)
Collect a stool sample with the appropriate swab/wand.
Insert it into the reagent vial.
Shake and place a few drops into the well of the test cassette.
Wait 5–10 minutes.
Interpret the result:
Lines Meaning
✅ 1 control line Negative test (no blood detected)
✅✅ 2 lines (control + test) Positive (presence of occult blood)
❌ No line Invalid test, repeat test
📅 When to Do It
Every 1–2 years after age 45–50 as a prevention of colon cancer.
If you experience symptoms: visible or invisible blood in your stool, anemia, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss.
In case of family history of intestinal tumors.

Non-invasive.
Easy to use at home.
Simple, preventative screening that can save lives.
⚠️ Limitations
The test does not identify the cause of the blood → it could be from:
Hemorrhoids, fissures, colitis, polyps or tumors.
If positive, it is mandatory to see a doctor for a colonoscopy or more in-depth tests.

👉 Get tested on a normal diet, preferably with the immunochemical test (iFOBT), which is more reliable and simple.
👉 If you are following a national screening program, do not replace the official test with a do-it-yourself one
